Two Oyster Bay men were arrested early Thursday morning after police say they stole mail in Mill Neck.
Detectives say that police officers spotted 48-year-old Joseph Cusick and 47-year-old William Glennerster near West Shore Road and Cleft Road at around 4 a.m.
The police saw a black trash bag near them containing pieces of mail. After an officer stopped the two and questioned them, Nassau police say mail from 18 different residents was recovered from the bag.
Authorities say Cusick and Glennerster live at the same address on South Street in Oyster Bay. They have been charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. Authorities have yet to release information about how the mail was stolen.
Authorities say mail theft is a known problem in the area. This incident comes in wake of several mail thefts reported on Long Island.
Three men were arrested for trying to snatch envelopes from a mailbox outside of the Merrick Post Office on Fisher Avenue last December, according to authorities. Prior to that, a check washing scam was discovered on Long Island.
In March of this year, two men were also caught stealing mail from a Uniondale post office on Front Street.
An Oyster Bay resident told News 12 that the incident is still shocking.
“I think it's really concerning. I wonder why they’re trying to steal mail and whether they’re looking for social security numbers, credit card information, personal information,” she said.
The two suspects are due in court on Oct. 27. Detectives ask anyone who believes they may be a victim to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
