Two alleged MS-13 gang members were charged Thursday in the murder of a Hempstead man.
Detectives say back in March, Hector Lazo, 18, and Pedro Rivera, 23, randomly shot and killed Nelson Rodriguez, 37, while he was walking down Front Street. Police say the incident was "gang-related."
Detectives say Rivera was the shooter in this incident and that more people may have been involved.
Police say Nelson Rodriquez was not in a gang. Four months later, his life is remembered with a makeshift memorial at the shooting site. It includes three soccer jerseys, including one from his native Honduras.
According to court documents, Lazo and Rivera were initially arrested Tuesday on other charges, including allegedly stealing someone's iPad. They were arraigned Thursday on the murder charges. Prosecutors say both were allegedly caught with fake resident cards and fraudulent Social Security cards.
They were remanded without bail.
