Two Central Islip men who orchestrated an underage sex trafficking ring in Suffolk County tried to turn a 12-year-old girl into a prostitute, according to police.
Police say 22-year-old Fredjy Exavier picked up 17- and 12-year-old girls at a Suffolk group home where they live and brought them to the Rodeway Inn in Ronkonkoma.
Investigators say 22-year-old Terron Newsome, a self-described "Crips" gang member, tried to engage in sexual activities with the 12-year-old at the hotel and convince her to become a prostitute.
"The 12-year-old...went into the bathroom and called a previous foster mother and told her she was being held against her will," says Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart.
Police say that ex-foster mother called 911, and officers alerted their newly created human trafficking unit. Police then raided the hotel and arrested the men.
Detectives say they later learned the 17-year-old had been a prostitute for Newsome since she was 13. Uzair Shaikh, from the Rodeway Inn, says he recognized the two men from staying at the hotel previously but had no idea they were with two young girls.
Hart says the 12-year-old is the youngest victim the department's human trafficking unit has ever been able to help and possibly save from a life of sex crimes.
The suspects are charged with sex trafficking, kidnapping and other offenses. Newsome is being held on $1 million bond, while Exavier is being held on $500,000 bond.
Police say the two girls are receiving counseling.
