Police say two young Long Islanders are among three who died in a violent crash on the Long Island Expressway in Maspeth this morning.
Chopper 12 was over the scene where the collision happened on the eastbound LIE near Exit 18.
Police say around 4:20 a.m., a black Infinity was speeding and lost control, crashing into a barrier.
According to police, the car was cut in half, and the front part of the vehicle flew off the road and landed on the lower roadway portion of the LIE. That is when police say a second vehicle crashed into the severed portion.
Police say three of the five people inside the Infinity were killed, including Christina Formato, 24, of Franklin Square, and Giovanny Sanchez, 24, of Brentwood. The driver of the vehicle, Michael Fabre, 25, of Oakland Gardens, was identified as the third fatal victim in the crash.
A family friend says Formato worked for the Nassau County Police Athletic League as a secretary.
The two other occupants of the Infinity are in critical and serious condition.
Police say the first collision also triggered a second pileup, involving five vehicles and a dump truck.
No one was seriously hurt in that secondary crash.
