Nassau police responded to Green Acres Mall Monday following a shooting inside Famous Footwear.
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says there are two suspects who appeared to know the victim.
Police say there was a brief verbal altercation before one suspect shot a man in the back of the leg.
"When we got there, the victim had crawled himself behind the counter," Ryder says. "So he had been shot right in front of the counter, and then took cover for himself behind the counter."
He says one suspect was holding the weapon that police believe was involved in the shooting.
The mall went into an immediate lockdown at around 4:30 p.m. Everyone inside stores were told to stay there and locked themselves in.
Anyone in the lobby of the mall was evacuated.
Gael Jean just started his shift at Shopper's World when he heard there was an active shooter in the building.
"Once I came outside, I saw the helicopter in the sky, you know a bunch of other people were standing outside," Jean says. "Nobody really knows what's going on."
The victim is recovering at a local hospital.
Police say they have many eyewitnesses and cameras to try and find the suspects who left in dark-colored clothing.
