Police say a woman was killed and a driver was arrested following a crash in Freeport on Wednesday night.
Police say a Buick that was driven by William Billups, of Hempstead, was originally pulled over for speeding. They say Billups took off once officers returned to their patrol van.
According to police, the Buick's driver was fleeing south on Rutland Road when he crashed into a Mercedes-Benz traveling west on Seaman Avenue.
The 24-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz was transported to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police say Billups was placed under arrest and charged with manslaughter. Billups was transported to a hospital for a leg injury and was expected to be arraigned from his hospital bed.
Police say a 33-year-old female passenger in Billups's car was transported to the hospital, where she died a short time later. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.
Officials say Billups has an extensive arrest history. They say he has had 22 prior arrests, 12 of which are for felonies. Authorities say Billups was driving with seven suspensions on his license.
Billups could receive a prison sentence of up to 15 years if convicted.
