Some parents in Woodbury are concerned about a plan to build a strip mall near a Woodbury elementary school.
The proposed strip mall between Walt Whitman Elementary and Jericho Turnpike would include 12 retail stores and a shared entrance.
The Syosset School District agreed to sell 2.4 acres of its property in September and is now considering selling another 1.3 acres for the strip mall. The deal would be worth $6.7 million.
Parents say the additional traffic the shopping center would bring would create unsafe conditions for the students.
"It's already a highly congested area," says Melissa Breitstein. "Two-lane Woodbury Road has been the home to numerous accidents."
Breitstein, along with other parents, collected 800 signatures on a petition against the project.
The school board plans to meet on Dec. 19 to discuss the proposal with the public.
