A Southwest Airlines flight that experienced mechanical problems landed safely at Long Island MacArthur Airport Monday morning.
Flight 195, bound for Fort Myers, Fla., was forced to dump its fuel and make the emergency landing due to engine trouble. All 132 passengers and crew members were taken off the plane safely, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Airline spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger says the Boeing 737 had taken off at 9:50 a.m. and returned to the airport at about 10:24 a.m. Airport officials say one of the plane's two engines lost compression. The planes are designed to fly and land with one engine, which the pilot did after shutting down the problem engine.
Eyewitnesses say one of the engines was on fire.
"I'm looking in the sky and then, a red, white and blue airplane comes flying over," says witness Tina Wright, of Holbrook. "It starts making the boom-boom-boom noise again and on the right side of the engine, flames were shooting out, these bright orange flames were shooting out. There was no smoke."
Lori Coyle, a passenger aboard the plane, says the incident was horrifying.
?Five minutes after takeoff we hear bang-bang-bang, and then someone said they saw the fire, and that's when the pilot came on and said [we] blew an engine...it was a horrible experience," says Coyle.
?I was thinking about what I wanted my last words to be and I was just praying to God,? 12-year-old passenger David Love, of Oakdale, says of the experience.
