The corruption conviction of state Sen. Dean Skelos earlier this month has residents calling for his name to be removed from the Dean Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre.
Back in 2003, News 12 was there as the complex was named for Skelos. After the FBI arrested Skelos earlier this year, a petition appeared online calling for the park to be renamed.
It now has over 300 signatures.
The man who started the petition told News 12, "No space owned and maintained by the public on Long Island or around New York state should ever be named for a sitting politician at taxpayer expense. The conviction of former Sen. Skelos only serves to make his name on the park even more absurd."
News 12 reached out to the Rockville Centre Mayor's Office to find out if the village has any plans to change the name of the park. They did not return calls for comment.
