Wednesday marks the five-year anniversary since the U.S. invaded Iraq and many local peace activists say they are still calling for the troops to come home.
Peace groups planned vigils across Long Island to remember the lives lost in the war and those still fighting in the Middle East. The war in Iraq has taken its toll ? both in lives and in dollars. So far, at least 4,000 American soldiers have been killed, with 24 of them from Long Island. The price tag is also up to $500 billion.
Peace activists say now is the time to vigorously challenge those who support the war.
Meanwhile, President Bush says the Iraq war is noble, just and necessary. He also says now is not the time for a full-scale retreat.
