Officials in Patchogue held a meeting Monday to discuss plans to open a Starbucks location on West Main Street.
The proposed Starbucks would take over the spot once occupied by the Bargain Bilge Supply building.
The coffee chain is looking to build a more than 2,000-square-foot storefront, complete with drive-thru. In order to do so, a change of zone is required.
But area residents have pushed back, saying they don't want the chain disrupting the small town feel of the area.
"It's really not wanted," says Robert Cutorne, co-owner of the Bean Coffee House. "It's really not something that the village believes is necessary."
Cutorne says the village prides itself on small business.
David Kennedy, executive director of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, says they're honored Starbucks wants to have a location on Main Street, but they are concerned about the impact on small businesses.
He also doesn't think a drive-thru at the Starbucks would be ideal for safety.
"What makes Patchogue special, and any downtown special is its walkability and a drive-thru in a walkable downtown just doesn't make sense to us," says Kennedy.
Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri is all for Starbucks coming to the village.
"I think it's a great idea," says Pontieri. "I think it's a great testament to where the community has come over the last 10 to 15 years."
