"Password fatigue" may be putting people's money and personal information at risk online.
Many people do not vary their passwords from website to website, or in some cases, do not change default passwords on products. Recently, a Russian programmer posted thousands of images pulled off the Internet from wireless security cameras to highlight that people were not changing the default manufacturer password. The photos included those of a child playing in a Huntington living room, a rec room in Levittown, a driveway in Syosset and a Long Island medical office.
Dr. Kees Leune, computer security expert at Adelphi University says it's vital to have different passwords for each device or site you use. He says password manager software can help - the software stores passwords in a virtual vault for easy access.
"Then you access those passwords just once by entering one password," he says. "That one password is the last password you will ever have to remember. That will give you access to everything else there is."
