An Oyster Bay man is in stable condition Tuesday after a New York City firefighter freed him from a burning car in a daring rescue.
Authorities say 58-year-old John Collymore fell asleep at the wheel on the Northern State Parkway near Shelter Rock Road early Tuesday. Collymore?s SUV crashed into a light pole and then went into the woods, where it caught fire.
FDNY firefighter Edward Bohan was at the right place at the right time. He was on his way to play golf when he stopped to try to help Collymore. Bohan says he struggled to break open a window of the vehicle, which was engulfed in flames. He then grabbed a highway mile marker and smashed through the glass, extricating Collymore and injuring his arm in the process.
Collymore is being treated for a broken hip, elbow and burns to the right side of his body. His daughter Bianca says she would love to personally thank Bohan for saving her father?s life.
