A carbon monoxide leak forced the temporary evacuation of workers at the Panera Bread in Huntington Station and sent several of them to the hospital.
The incident occurred at the Walt Whitman Mall just after 8 a.m.
Officials say about 10 people were evacuated from the restaurant, and seven employees who reported feeling ill were transported to a hospital.
The Huntington Manor Fire Department investigated and traced the carbon monoxide leak to a building under construction next door. That building is the site of a former Legal Sea Foods restaurant, where the manager died after a faulty heating system leaked carbon monoxide into the basement in February 2014.
That restaurant did not have any detectors, and as a result, several laws were passed on the state and local levels requiring commercial buildings to install carbon monoxide detectors.
Officials say the source of the latest leak was a piece of machinery that emitted exhaust and vented into the Panera. They say that the source of the 2014 incident was different.
The Huntington fire marshal issued several summons to the construction company that was working on the space next door.
Panera Bread says it does have carbon monoxide detectors installed in the restaurant, but it is unclear if the detectors alerted employees of the danger.
