Residents of the Palisade Towers complex in Yonkers will likely have to wait several months before their gas service is restored.
The problem began last week when a series of leaks were discovered in the main gas line to the complex. Con Edison was forced to shut off gas service to the more than 400 units resulting in the loss of hot water and cooking gas for all the residents.
Yonkers city officials say they have three options. Make repairs to the damaged lines, shift all the buildings from gas to electric, or create a hybrid fix where the stoves are electric, but the hot water is heated by gas.
City officials say while they plan to make a decision as quickly as possible, it will likely take several months to complete the repairs. Meanwhile local businesses have been stepping in to help with food deliveries.
