The cold temps and gusty winds on Long Island are bitter, especially for people working outdoors.
Alberto Hernandez, of Westbury, was cutting and sanding glass out front of a local business in Hicksville on Tuesday.
"Working outside, it's cold today,” said Hernandez.
The bitter cold hits people hard, even if they spend just a few moments outside
Bobby Klemm, from Baldwin, was out delivering packages and trying to make the best of it.
"Without the wind it's not that bad. The wind is killing it. Your nose, your fingers, your toes. But as long as I’m dry, I’m alright,” said Klemm.
Some people who were outside on Tuesday were not fortunate enough to have a warm coat and gloves.
"There's many people who don't have proper coats and they need gloves and hats. Of course, we can't supply everyone, but we do the best we can,” said Kathleen Gavigan, an outreach specialist with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.
Outreach specialists with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless were out on the streets in Hempstead, making sure people were getting warm weather gear and information about resources in the freezing temperatures.
People who needed these essentials told News 12 they were grateful for the outreach specialists' help on this cold day.
There is a 24-hour warming center open at Mitchel Field in Uniondale for anyone who needs a warm place to spend the night.
