Winter decided to leave with a bang, creating a slippery start to St. Patrick?s Day for Long Island residents Saturday.
Sleet turned to rain over night and froze, leaving a coating on ice on roads, sidewalks and cars. Cleaning off cars proved to be a time-consuming chore. And while ice-covered trees were at times beautiful, walking on the sidewalks became treacherous.
Black ice was prevalent throughout the island and numerous accidents lined the parkways. Police are investigating if weather was to blame for an accident on the Long Island Expressway that claimed the life of a 68-year-old man.
