Officials hope Long Island residents took precautions, celebrated New Year’s Eve at home
Officials across the Island warned residents to take extra precautions on the road and against COVID-19 on New Year's Eve. But primarily, they hope people chose to stay home.
COVID-19 cases on Long Island are soaring once again. Officials in Suffolk say they're up to a nearly 13% infection rate, triple the amount from just a month ago. Meanwhile, 10% of people in Nassau County have tested positive for coronavirus.
In addition to the usual reminder to not drink and drive, Nassau Executive Laura Curran had this message for residents on New Year's Eve. A message, she says, you're already probably sick of hearing.
"We're asking you while we're waiting for wider distribution of the vaccine, we want to keep life as normal as we can. We don't want to face more restrictions. Our hospitals are in OK shape right now, but we know if they reach capacity the governor has said more restrictions could come. So we can celebrate at home. We can celebrate in a way that will be memorable, a very 2020 celebration and then next year we can probably just go all out again," says Curran.
Private gatherings of more than 10 people are still restricted under New York guidelines.
