Authorities say a state trooper was struck on the Northern State Parkway on Saturday by a driver who was allegedly under the influence of drugs at the time.

Police say the trooper pulled over a car for speeding and was standing outside the vehicle when he was allegedly struck by Michael O'Rourke, of Hicksville.

Officials say marijuana was found inside O'Rourke's car, and that he was allegedly high at the time of the incident. He was arrested and is now facing charges.

Authorities say the trooper was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to be OK.

The accident brought the Northern State to a standstill for several hours. Officials diverted traffic down the Meadowbrook Parkway while troopers investigated the accident. All lanes have since been reopened.
