State officials and residents in Farmingdale are calling on the Department of Transportation to change a traffic light following the death of a 14-year-old girl.
It's been nearly three weeks since the girl was killed in a car accident at the intersection of Route 109 and Main Street.
Residents say the traffic light has been a problem for years and that something needs to change fast. Sen. John Brooks and others say one big issue in the area is the left turn arrow.
They say the arrow usually only stays green for a few seconds and then disappears. It then quickly gives drivers in the opposite direction a green light.
"If somebody's paying attention and it's one car, that's OK. Two cars, it's close. Three cars, it's dangerous,” says Brooks. "That light goes green, you have no idea if someone else thought they had a green light to make a turn, so you're going to continue driving, and suddenly, that car is in the criss-cross."
Brooks says one solution would be to lengthen the time the arrow stays green and then make the arrow turn red instead of disappearing.
"Do we need to lose another life? Do we need to have another fatality? Do we need to have another accident?” asked one resident.
