The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has released police body camera video from a police-involved shooting in Wayne.

The shooting happened on Feb. 14. Officials say officers responded to a home for reports of a man who took approximately 20 Xanax pills.

Prosecutor Camelia Valdes says Connor Darpino threatened officers from a balcony while holding two swords. The bodycam video then shows the moment Darpino came down the stairs with the swords before one officer opened fire.

“Put your hands up,” an officer is heard saying.

“Drop ‘em, drop ‘em now,” another officer is heard saying.

The officer then shot Darpino when he refused to drop the swords. That officer was identified as Lt. Douglas Itjen.
Officials say Itjen fired his gun seven times, striking Darpino five times. He survived the shooting.

Darpino's lawyer says he underwent several surgeries and has severe and permanent injuries.

Valdes says Darpino is facing multiple charges and an investigation into Itjen is ongoing.

Once the investigation is complete, it will be presented to a grand jury to determine whether Itjen’s use of force was justified.
