Nassau County officials are calling on the state to turn the Nassau Coliseum into a mass vaccination site.
The Republican majority of the Nassau Legislature made the call to Gov. Andrew Cuomo in hope of speeding up the vaccination process on the Island.
Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello says Long Island needs more help in fighting COVID-19 because it has the highest infection rate in the state.
"In today's paper, the governor again notes that Long Island has the highest positivity rate in the state ... In his words, 'Long Island, Long Island, Long Island,'" says Nicolello.
Citing Friday's opening of a mass vaccination site at Yankee Stadium for Bronx residents, Nicolello says the state should take a similar approach at the Nassau Coliseum.
"What's frustrating is the county getting 2,800 vaccines a day and they said they're going to open up Yankee Stadium to distribute 1,500 in a week. What about the county, what about the Coliseum? There's so much need here," says Nicolello.
The governor's office says the problem isn't a lack of distribution sites, but a shortage of vaccine supply.
The governor's spokesman says, "The reality is Long Island has received the most vaccines in the state after New York City, we've launched two mass vaccination sites on Long Island, and we've deployed seven community vaccine hubs to the region."
When asked if she would push for Nassau Coliseum to be a mass vaccination site, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says she's hopeful the supply chain will open up soon.
"I'm imagining we're going to see bigger and more distribution sites as we get more vaccine," says Curran. "But every question leads to that same answer. We need more supply."
