A Nassau County Jail inmate died at Nassau University Medical Center Tuesday night - the fifth custody death at the facility this year, according to authorities.
It was not clear why the male inmate was hospitalized.
Officials have not released the inmate's name, but they say he was 20 years old. They say he had been in jail for close to a year and was admitted to the Nassau University Medical Center one week before his death.
Armor Correctional Health Services - which provides medical care at the jail - is already being investigated by the state attorney general.
The state Commission of Correction called Armor "grossly incompetent" and added that recent inmate deaths "may have been prevented."
County officials say they are looking to replace Armor, but it is not a quick process.
"We're talking about human lives," says Legislator Siela Bynoe. "We're talking about individuals that are under the care of the county."
