A Suffolk woman is accused of falsifying documents after adopting a dog from a Nassau shelter so she could sell it for quick cash on Craigslist.
Prosecutors say Lisette Tobon, 23, went to the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter last November and told a shelter worker she wanted to adopt an 8-year-old Pekingese named Willow that she had seen online.
According to investigators, Tobon filled out the adoption paperwork using false personal information. After taking the dog home, Tobon allegedly listed the animal for sale on Craigslist. Within days, a woman answered the ad, and Tobon is accused of lying about the dog's age and the reason it was listed for sale.
Prosecutors say Tobon sold the dog to the woman for $200.
Investigators say the woman became suspicious when she noticed the dog's medical papers had been doctored. They say Tobon had cut off the Town of North Hempstead letterhead from the dog's medical form, and had scratched out the animal's age. Tobon told the woman the dog was 3 years old, instead of 8.
Tobon had left a space that mentioned the animal shelter's website on the form, so the woman knew to contact the shelter, officials say.
Prosecutors say Tobon later returned to the same shelter to try to adopt another dog, but workers confronted her, so she left. She also attempted to adopt a dog from the Town of Babylon using falsified papers, but was denied, according to authorities.
She was later arrested and charged with fraud. She faces a maximum of four years in prison if convicted.
