An inmate at the Nassau County Correctional Center was slashed Wednesday evening, officials say.
News 12 is told the assailant was an MS-13 gang member.
Officials are calling for more manpower and resources following staffing shortages, which they say result in less search being conducted for weapons like the one used in the slashing.
"When you're tired, you're always working overtime, you have to do search, you have to supervise inmates and then you have these types of predatory inmates in our facilities doing this heinous act," says Brian Sullivan, Nassau Correction Officers Benevolent Association. "It's a recipe for disaster."
Sullivan tells News 12 that the jail is currently down approximately 100 officers from its optimal staffing levels.
Nassau County has not returned calls for comments as of 8 p.m. Friday.
