An official in Freeport says fixing potholes on some roads is out of the village’s hands.
Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy says the village is always working to fix potholes, but he says many of the roads people complain about are in the county’s jurisdictions, not the village’s.
The mayor says if someone calls his office to complain about a pothole in the village limits, he will have someone from the DWP out to fix the issue within 24 to 48 hours, but he says many times people don't call the office and let him know.
Kennedy if someone has an issue with a county road, they need to report it to the Nassau County DPW.
He says potholes can be a result of salt put down on the roads in the winter to melt ice or from the high water levels underground on Long Island.  He says some potholes are left over from Superstorm Sandy when water on the roads put pressure on the asphalt.
