At least three Suffolk police officers were injured, two of them seriously, after being stabbed during a Wednesday incident that ended with a suspect being fatally shot.
Investigators were at the scene for more than 12 hours processing evidence.
Officers were called to a residence on Birchwood Road around 5 p.m. Wednesday over reports that a man was allegedly threatening his roommate with a fire extinguisher.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said the suspect lunged at the officers - stabbing one in the neck and groin and the other in his chest, hitting a rib.
One of the three officers fired four rounds and shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.
The suspect was a 56-year-old man, but he has yet to be identified. In 2011, the man who was killed was arrested for assaulting a police officer and served time.
People who live in the complex believe the man who was killed may be the same person who has been damaging other residents' property. Some said they didn't feel safe living near him.
"This has been an ongoing problem, but the board has known, nothing has been done about it," said Dawn Rodriguez. "Unfortunately, it came to two officers being stabbed."
Police said they are investigating but cannot confirm it is the same person at this time.
Concern Housing, which runs the complex, said it is praying for all involved and released a statement saying in part, "We are conducting a thorough investigation and are cooperating with police and other officials."
Harrison did not give the identities of the officers involved but did say one is an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan and whose wife is expecting their first child. That individual is in serious but stable condition.
The second officer who was stabbed is also a veteran and is in stable condition.
