An off-duty Suffolk County police officer saved a North Amityville woman and her four dogs from a fire Friday night.
Officer Walter Hetzel and his wife were driving down the road when they noticed flames coming from a home. They pulled over and Hetzel rushed to the house, kicked down the front door and ran inside to check for people, while his wife called 911.
Hetzel found Jamie Taylor and her four dogs inside and was able to bring them all to safety moments before the home was engulfed by flames. Taylor sustained no injuries, but one of her dogs remains at an animal hospital.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
