An off-duty emergency medical technician (EMT) from Franklin Square almost died trying to save a suicidal woman Thursday.
Daniel Fitzpatrick, a New York City EMT, was at a Brooklyn subway station on his way home when a suicidal woman was spotted on the tracks. Fitzpatrick says he rushed over, leapt onto the tracks and forced the woman against the platform fence as a speeding train approached. At the last moment, he says an anonymous man reached down and moved his head, which he didn't realize was still in the path of the train. At a news conference, Fitzpatrick expressed his gratitude and asked the man to come forward so he could thank him in person.
After the train sped by, however, the woman attempted to end her life by reaching for the third rail. She also tried to jump off the platform to the street. Police have not released the woman's identity, but say she is being treated at Belleview Hospital.
