An Oceanside park has been renamed in honor of a fallen 9/11 hero.
Nassau County's Terrell Avenue Park now bears the name Detective Luis G. Alvarez Memorial Park. Alvarez helped fight to extend health benefits for first responders at Ground Zero.
Alvarez most notably urged Congress to extend first responder benefits alongside Jon Stewart a short time before his death. He died last year after a battle with 9/11-related cancer.
The concept for the park was created by his widow and the renaming comes on what would have been the detective's 55th birthday.
"It's just some place people can come to and just stay in the moment and not think about the future or the past and just enjoy life to its fullest," says Alaine Alvarez.
