At Fresh Food Supermarket in Oakdale, a promotion gone political has stirred up plenty of controversy.
Things began last week when owner Jose Colon placed an ad on Facebook offering 20% off all items, excluding beer, to customers who identified themselves as a President Trump supporter at the checkout register.
Colon, who is a Trump supporter, said his store received instant backlash and criticism on social media.
"I've been getting a lot of messages that I don't want to support the store, they're going to do a boycott on the store," says Colon.
Since last Wednesday, Colon's ad has received more than 1,000 comments, including, "Support Trump 2020 and Back the Blue. I can't wait to shop at your store" and "Now food shopping is political? I'll never spend a penny there."
Despite the reaction, Colon says he has no plans to stop the discount and he's not afraid of losing business.
"We live in a free country. We live in a democracy and I believe you support whatever candidate you decide who will be the best for the country," says Colon.
He even says now he's offering a 20% discount for Joe Biden supporters, saying, "I'm encouraging people to vote. I got no problem with it."
Some customers who News 12 spoke to said they came into the store not for the discount, but to show their support for Colon.
