The NYPD rolled out unprecedented security measures Thursday aimed at keeping revelers safe during the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square.
"This is going to be one of the most well-policed, best-protected events in one of the safest venues in the entire world," said NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill.
The NYPD says beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday, all crosstown traffic between 37th and 59th streets and 6th and 8th avenues will be closed to motorists. There will be even further restrictions on truck traffic, and all parking garages in the area will be sealed.
"There will be heavy weapons teams and dogs assigned throughout the entire viewing area. In addition, we will have our ESU unit working hand in hand with the FBI with counter snipers assigned to the entire viewing area," said NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says security will also be tight at the Phish concert at Madison Square Garden, as well as across the city and the region.
"We don't have any information of a specific threat. This is all proactive, this is all precautionary," said Gov. Cuomo.
Commissioner O'Neill said anyone who plans to trek into Manhattan should use mass transit.
