A meter collector is facing multiple charges after attempting to pull over an off-duty NYPD cop on the Long Island Expressway early Monday morning.
Police say 24-year-old Department of Transportation employee George Mathew used a single flashing blue light on his dashboard to pull over the officer, who was on his way home from work, near exit 32. The officer, whom Nassau police did not identify, said he immediately knew it was a bogus situation because police only use flashing blue and red lights or a single red light. Authorities say the officer held Mathew until Nassau police arrived.
Mathew is charged with reckless driving, criminal impersonation and reckless endangerment. Officials urge caution to those who fear they are being pulled over by someone who is not a cop. They tell residents to call 911, describe the suspicious activity and give their location.
