An NYPD officer from Long Island is on his way home after being shot in Brooklyn.
Officer William Reddin, of Lynbrook, was released from Kings County Hospital today after being shot in the hip on Saturday in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn.
As News 12 has reported, Reddin and Officer Andrew Yurkiw, of Wantagh, were struck following a gunfight with a suspect.
Officer Yurkiw's protective vest was struck by a bullet. He was released from the hospital and is now recovering at home.
Investigators say the incident began when officers responded to a report of possible shots fired at 3:20 a.m. Saturday. As the officers approached the area, authorities say a man pointed a revolver at them. The suspect, identified as Jamal Funes, 34, then fled in a vehicle and the officers followed, police say.
The brief chase ended when Funes crashed into a patrol car nearby. Police officials say Funes and the officers then exchanged fire.
