Two NYPD officers from Long Island are recovering after they were shot in a Queens subway station Tuesday.Police say officers Shane Farina and Jason Maass were trying to arrest a man for illegally using a student discount fare to enter the station. According to police, a struggle ensued and the suspect, 32-year-old Raul Nunez, grabbed a gun from one of the officers.Investigators say Nunez shot Officer Farina, 38, in the torso and Officer Maass, 28, in the torso and lower back. Police say Nunez tried to flee, but was shot four times in his legs and torso by another officer in the subway station. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan under police surveillance. Farina, who lives in Center Moriches, is in critical, but stable condition at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens. Maass, of West Babylon, has been released from the hospital and is recovering at his home. Maass? brother says the officer is very concerned about his partner.
Police say Nunez may have re-entered the United States illegally from the Dominican Republic after previously being deported. He told police he started the struggle with the officers because he was afraid of being deported again.
