New York City hosted its 44th annual Gay Pride Parade today after a week of important rulings on same-sex marriage by the Supreme Court.

Same-sex couples won a major victory as a provision of a federal law denying federal benefits to married gay couples was struck down, clearing the way for the resumption of same-sex marriages in California.

Edith Windsor, the parade's grand marshal, decided to sue after she was forced to pay more than $360,000 in estate taxes after her long-time partner passed away. The Supreme Court struck down a provision that denied her the same benefits as straight couples.

Many in attendance said that today's parade had a more celebratory feeling than in past years.
