It's 12 Weeks of Summer's food week at News 12 Long Island and Elizabeth Hashagen teamed up with nutritionist Maria Dello to bring you some tips on how to stay healthy while snacking this summer.
Dello says that 75 percent of people become dehydrated during the summer months and one way to combat dehydration is to "eat your water."
Three fun summer snacks that can help you beat the heat and stay hydrated are watermelon, cucumber and kiwi.
Dello says watermelon, cucumber and kiwi are all filled with tons of water, potassium and anti-oxidants. Cucumber has the added bonus of containing silica, which is great for maintaining healthy skin and nails.
In addition to staying hydrated, it's also important to beware of sugary snacks. Dello suggests swapping out those high sugar foods for healthier options, such as fruit, yogurt and, of course, veggies.
