A soggy Saturday in the forecast didn’t dampen spirits at Jones Beach, where athletes said rain wouldn’t stop them from competing in the Northwell Health Ironman event.
The athletes will take to the water, the parkway and the boardwalk to swim, bike and run. They’ll be covering a total of 70.3 miles. Organizers expect thousands of supporters in addition to the more than 3,000 participants.
Also set for Saturday: the annual Cow Harbor race in Northport. That event, like the Ironman event, is still expected to happen. Further east, the Hamptons Marathon and Half is also still happening. The organizer said rain isn’t going to stop them, but she did say they’re working closely with police in anticipation of possible course changes should there be any flooding.
Unfortunately, the Maritime Festival in Greenport was canceled.
Bad weather doesn’t always bode well for local businesses, which can benefit from big events. Eric Alexander, founder of the Long Island Main Street Alliance, said there will be fewer opportunities for vendors and shops “to make the dollars they need.”
