Long Island residents faced a messy commute Thursday during the evening rush hour.

Dozens of accidents on back roads and highways slowed traffic to a crawl in some areas. In Freeport, a portion of a Meadowbrook Parkway overpass crumbled, sending pieces of stone down onto Sunrise Highway below. The National Weather Service has predicted final accumulations between four and six inches for Long Island, with the North Shore bearing the brunt of the storm. Forecasters say sleet is likely to mix with snow on the South Shore.

Plows, sanders and salt trucks are out in Long Island towns and villages to make the commute a little easier. Residents are urged to stay off the roads if possible.
