The Town of North Hempstead wants to launch a license plate reader program in May.

An official town car would be outfitted with a camera and would drive around parking lots taking pictures of cars that are not registered with the town. A ticket would be placed on the windshields of those not registered.

Town officials say it would eliminate the use of parking stickers, save money for the town and be more efficient for enforcement.

All parking stickers in the town are set to expire June 1. The plan only affects commuter parking.

There will be a public hearing on the issue on April 19 at Town Hall in Manhasset.

If the proposed legislation goes through, it would cost $240 a year for each car, which is the same as the current cost.
