Signs around the town of North Hempstead say pet owners will face a fine of up to $250 if they do not clean up after their dogs.
Despite the signage, the actual fines are only $25 to $75, according to town code.
Currently, there are nearly 2,000 signs posted around the town, which also mention a possible prison sentence for violations.
The town board will soon consider changing the law to reflect what the signs say.
Dog owner Bob Ryan says doing what's right by picking up after your pet should not be difficult.
The town says that this past year, no violations or fines were issued, but its call center did receive nearly two dozen complaints.
