Southampton police say a noose was discovered last month hanging from a LIPA pole in an open field near Sag Harbor.
Co-chair of the Town of Southampton Anti-bias Task Force Dianne Rulnick condemned the latest noose incident Monday. She said the Town Board has asked the police department to develop a new procedure for handling such crimes.
?Once it has been determined that an incident may be of a bias incident or hate crime nature the Suffolk Police Department hate crimes unit will be requested to review all offenses and assume primary investigative responsibility for hate offenses,? Rulnick said.
Police said it?s not that simple because most hate crimes go unreported, especially by illegal immigrants who believe they may be deported if they go to the police. They also said they have no leads in this case.
A new state law makes it a felony to display a noose as a threat.
