(10/13/06) MINEOLA ? Jurors in the wrong-way Meadowbrook Parkway crash trial adjourned without reaching a verdict Friday and will continue pouring over evidence after the weekend break.
The major factor jurors have to consider is the mindset of defendant Martin Heidgen, who is accused of killing two people in a DWI crash. Prosecutors are pushing for a second-degree murder charge, saying Heidgen acted with depraved indifference to human life. However, the jury could find Heidgen guilty of manslaughter or criminal negligence. Either of those ruling carry less jail time than the 25 years Heidgen could face under a murder conviction.
Thursday, jurors asked to be reread the testimony of two police officer who spoke to Heidgen shortly after the 2005 crash. Family members of the two dead victims, Stanley Rabinowitz and Katie Flynn, hope that move signals a possible conviction.
