A New Cassel mother accused of drowning her three children in a bathtub was ordered sent to a psychiatric facility Monday after pleading not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
Leatrice Brewer is facing murder charges in last year?s incident. Prosecutors say Brewer attempted suicide twice the morning of the incident. She told officials she believed her children, Jewell Ward, 6, Michael Demesyeux, 5 and Innocent Demesyeux, 18 months, were under a voodoo spell and had to be killed.
According to the plea, Brewer, 28, will not face jail time. Her family says the outcome was the best possible one for Brewer. However, Innocent Demesyeuz, father of two of the children, says he's shocked and disappointed Brewer won't stand trial.
?If there's no trial, they will never know how the county government failed my kids,? Demesyeuz says. ?They should have their day in court.?
The children?s deaths prompted an investigation into social service procedures, as Brewer had a history with the system. However, Leg. Roger Corbin (D-Westbury) says in the year since the incident, he's not sure if anything's changed.
