The nominations for the 86th Academy Awards were announced this morning in Beverly Hills. News 12's Elisa DiStefano sat down with Newsday film critic Rafer Guzman to discuss the nominees and his predictions of who will win.

This year, nine films are nominated for the coveted Best Picture Award. They are "Gravity," "American Hustle," "12 Years a Slave," "Captain Phillips," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Her," "Nebraska," "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "Philomena." Both "Gravity" and "American Hustle" lead the nominations with 10 nods each.

The best actor nominees are Chiwetel Ejiofor ("12 Years a Slave"), Bruce Dern ("Nebraska"), Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Wolf of Wall Street"), Matthew McConaughey ("Dallas Buyers Club") and Christian Bale ("American Hustle"). The best actress nominees are Amy Adams ("American Hustle"), Cate Blanchett ("Blue Jasmine"), Sandra Bullock ("Gravity"), Judi Dench ("Philomena") and Meryl Streep ("August: Osage County").

Though historically the most-nominated films have taken home best picture, that's not been the case in recent years. Six of the last 10 years the most-nominated film hasn't triumphed in the end, including last year when Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," with 12 nominations, was beaten by Ben Affleck's "Argo."

"12 Years a Slave" recently won the Golden Globe for best motion picture - drama.

The Academy Awards will air live on March 2 at 7 p.m. on ABC. They will be hosted for a second time by Ellen DeGeneres.
