Police say an abandoned newborn was found in the lobby of an apartment complex on Lafayette Avenue in Hempstead Sunday.
According to investigators, the Hispanic girl was just a day old. A resident at the complex discovered the newborn inside a shoe box at around 9:30 p.m.
Police say the baby appears to be in good health, but was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for examination.
There is a state Safe Haven Law that states a mother can turn her baby over within the first five days to the proper authorities if she can?t care for it. Those who turn their children over properly will not face prosecution. However, the outright abandonment of a child is a crime and Nassau police say they are now trying to locate the mother.
Anyone with information is asked to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
