Dozens of Superstorm Sandy charities are being questioned about what they're doing with donations.

More than $575 million went to 89 charities in the aftermath of the October superstorm, but New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says at least 42 percent of money raised has not yet gone to Sandy victims.

At a news conference in Breezy Point today, Schneiderman released a report that found those charities gave out far less than they collected.

"The actual amount of money spent on victims of the storm we believe was in fact lower than the 58 percent they reported," Schneiderman says.

The attorney general stopped short of alleging criminality but pointed out that his office has the power to sanction or shut down charities.

The American Red Cross was among the charities named. A statement from the organization pointed out that Schneiderman's report is based on data from March. As of June 11, the American Red Cross says nearly three-quarters of Sandy money has been "spent or committed."
