Starting today, a new smoke detector law goes into effect in New York State.

All new or replacement smoke detectors must now be hard-wired to buildings or they must be powered by a non-removable battery that is good for 10 years.

State officials say these smoke detectors are safer because they do not require periodic battery replacements.

The law does not require the replacement of any existing smoke detectors powered by replaceable batteries.
