Some new boats will soon be required to have capacity limits listed on board.
A boat industry trade group will require new boats to have plaques stating the maximum weight limit for upper decks.
The new standard comes after the fatal capsizing of the Kandi Won four years ago in Oyster Bay, which resulted in the deaths of three young children. Investigators determined the boat was overcrowded at the time.
Smaller boats already have weight limits posted. Some people tell News 12 they think the new rules should include the weight limit for the whole boat, not just the bridge.
The rules, which go into effect next summer, would not require boats that are already in use, or used boats that are being sold, to have the weight limit plaques added.
