366ds agoA new record label has launched with the goal of giving Black, trans artists a chance to live out their music dreams.
Feeling the need to create a platform for transgender artists to be seen and heard, Asanni Armon and Sergio Rivera co-founded Them Records.
Armon is a Brooklyn-based rapper and activist who says she got the idea to start the label after launching her mutual aid organization 'For the Gworls' in 2019. The organization raised thousands of dollars for rental assistance and affirmative surgery, but she wanted to do more.
"I was just thinking it would be cool to really try to bring together a label of really dope, Black, trans artists, who would otherwise get overlooked in the industry," she says.
Them Records has six artists signed so far, including Rapture, a music artist who sings, raps and plays the piano.
